The three-layer system: dress like an onion, only smarter

The biggest mistake we see in beginners is not bad gear, it is one thick jacket. You are hot in the valley, cold on the ridge, and your sweat stays trapped against your skin, chilling you like a wet towel. The answer is as old as mountaineering itself: several thin layers instead of one thick one.

The first layer is the skin of your system and it has one job, to move sweat away from your body. Merino or synthetic, never cotton. Cotton soaks up moisture, holds on to it and keeps you warm only while it is dry. In the mountains that can be genuinely dangerous, not merely uncomfortable.

The second layer is insulation: a fleece or a light down jacket that traps warm air against you. Rule of thumb: walking uphill in it you should feel slightly cool. If it feels pleasantly warm while you stand outside the hut, you will be soaked half an hour into the walk.

The third layer is the shield: a windbreaker or a hardshell with a membrane that stops rain and wind but lets sweat out. Wear it only when you need it, because a membrane worn all day in the sun is a sauna with a zip.

The whole art is in swapping layers. One layer off before the climb, one layer on the moment you reach the top, before you start feeling cold. What chills you is cooling sweat, and a dry walker in fewer layers is warmer than a soaked one in more.

You do not need the whole catalogue to start: a merino tee, a fleece and a rain jacket cover three quarters of Slovenian trips. A down jacket comes later, when you start going higher, further and into colder months. If you are unsure, come in. We would rather help you put together three right pieces than sell you five wrong ones.

A question about your own case? We would rather answer beforehand.
